On Celebrating Día De Los Muertos

Getting the ofrenda ready...

They can try and erase a culture, but they’ll never win.

They can try to erase a culture while also trying to profit off of it. I believe that’s an aspect of “capitalism”.

The local Target selling Día de los Muertos ...stuff(?) made in China.

They can try to erase a culture.

They can try.

I say, “Try. I dare you.”

My family celebrates the holiday to honor our ancestors and loved ones that have passed on to the other side. Our Día de los Muertos altar is piecing together (first photograph above) as we prepare for the holiday. Día de los Muertos is a combination of an Aztec tradition from 3,000 years ago and the Catholic tradition of honoring ancestors and loved ones that have passed away for All Souls Day.

Day of the Dead is not Halloween as it's celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Although, the two holidays have started to intermingle over the years.

The last step for us is to bake "pan de muerto"...

They can try to erase a culture.

They can try. And to that I say, "You'll never win."
