Meet Me At The End Of The World.
I have an affinity for "end of the world" movies. Maybe because there's a definite ending: the world has ended, so that's it. There can be no sequel. Ever. I remember landing in this genre of films during the pandemic and it seemed so appropriate at the time.
This is a living list of "end of the world" movies that I really like and have marked as either more "comedy" or "sad".
Melancholia - (sad + gorgeous photography)
It's A Disaster - (comedy)
Into The Forest - (very sad and depressing + too plausible)
Starfish (2018) - (sad)
Leave The World Behind - (mixture)
I found it interesting that the Netflix movie Leave The World Behind received low ratings from the audience. It seems the (very lauded) book it's based on wasn't necessarily a hit with the public either, but I haven't read it myself. I'm not sure people realize that a movie (or book) doesn't have to have "likable" characters for it to be good and the reason I did like the movie is because it was trying to show what people would really devolve into once it's clear that something is very wrong. The unknown can make society nuts.
I've only seen a portion of Don't Look Up- it's really quite long and could have been slimmed down a bit. So, am not sure if the world ends in that one or not. Maybe I'll finish it someday...
I'll have to check those out. My favorite (modern classic) is 12 Monkeys. And that newish one with Tom Hanks, a dog and a robot.
ReplyDelete12 Monkeys... (that's the one where Gwynie's head ends up in a box? I think "Finch" is the Tom Hanks movie. But can there be a sequel??
